Convicted killer who escaped from federal prison caught after 4 years on the lam

  Correctional authorities say a convicted killer who escaped from a federal prison in Quebec more than four years ago was recaptured this week. Denis Bégin had disappeared on Feb. 15, 2019, from a minimum security unit at the Federal Training Centre, north of Montreal. Bégin, 62, was serving a life sentence for a 1993 murder committed in Montreal when he escaped. Correctional Service Canada said Bégin had been recaptured Monday by police in Montreal after being at large for 51 months. Trending Now Montreal police Const. 140kg of New Zealand-bound meth busted at B.C. port

  Descrease article font size Increase article font size Canadian border officials say they recently intercepted a shipment of 140 kg (more than 300 pounds) of methamphetamine being smuggled out of the country at a B.C. port. In a media release, the Canada Border Services Agency said the officers made the bust on March 30 at the Tsawwassen Container Examination Facility. CBSA officers were tipped off about the shipment with intelligence from police and customs officials in New Zealand. It said officers inspected a container believed to be destined for the Commonwealth country with the help of a drug detecting dog, and found a “white, crystal-like substance” hidden in a piece of machinery. Tests later confirmed the substance was methamphetamine. The CBSA has since referred the case to the RCMP.   Albany, Oregon — Seven people were killed and multiple others hurt in a crash involving several vehicles Thursday on Interstate 5 in an agricultural area of western Oregon, police said. Officers responded at about 2:05 p.m. to the crash involving two semi trucks and a passenger vehicle in the northbound lanes about 7 miles north of Albany, near the Santiam rest area, Oregon State Police said in a statement. Seven adults died, police said, but they didn’t specify how many were injured. The passenger vehicle involved was a van, the Albany Democrat-Herald reported. Bodies covered in plastic could be seen in a nearby field and the Marion County medical examiner was at the scene, the newspaper said. A Life Flight helicopter left the scene at about 2:45 p.m. Police and fire officials put a blue tarp on the wrecked van and placed a barrier near one of the trucks to block the view of the scene, according to the Democrat-Herald.   Three people accused of trying to steal a couple of travel trailers in a matter of hours were arrested Thursday. A 2002 Dodge Ram truck that police claim was involved in a break-and-enter theft of a travel trailer on Lougheed Road was spotted at 12:30 a.m. allegedly trying to steal another trailer. “Officers followed the suspect truck, observing a male driver and a female and male passenger.   Police are seeking a suspect accused of assaulting a person at an encampment site at city hall in Hamilton, Ont. Investigators say the incident happened just after 5 p.m. in the area of Hunter Street West and MacNab Street South and involved a man with an edged weapon. A female suffered minor injuries from what appeared to have been from a knife. The suspect is described as a male around six feet tall with shoulder-length black hair wearing a blue t-shirt and tan pants. Detectives are seeking surveillance video or any witnesses that may have been in the area between 3:30 p.m and 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
