Surfers face ;chaotic; waves and storm surge in hurricane season

Image
00:00 00:07 As Hurricane Irma raged in the Caribbean at the peak of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season, rising professional surfer Zander Venezia, a teenager, died in a sudden drowning while trying to ride mega-swell waves in Barbados. It was neither the first nor the last time a surfer’s attempt to venture out during a storm surge ended in tragedy. “It’s really common when we’re in September and having those hurricane conditions to have a very unexpected storm surge,” said Corey Senese, a lifelong surfer who founded and gives lessons at CoreysWave, a surfing school in Montauk, New York.  “We do have a few terrible, tragic stories involving storm surges,” Senese told CBS News. “It’s really dangerous because you’re not expecting it.” Senese noted that surfers, swimmers and beachgoers alike contend with potentially perilous circumstances year-round, like sneaker waves, rogue waves, undertow and rip currents, which can be deadly.  A surfer takes on 5- to 7-foot swells coming off the Atl

Can air quality affect skin health? A dermatologist explains as more Canadian wildfire smoke hits the U.S.

Image
As Canadian wildfire smoke continues to blanket parts of the U.S. and endanger the health of millions of people, experts say there is an organ that requires just as much attention as your lungs: your skin. “Pollution can damage the skin by a lot of the same mechanisms that UV radiation can,” Dr. Shayan Cheraghlou, a resident dermatology physician in New York City, told CBS News. “That’s by generating reactive oxygen species that can cause premature aging of the skin, [and] can exacerbate underlying skin conditions like eczema or other inflammatory skin conditions.” Reactive oxygen species, according to the National Cancer Institute, are a “type of unstable molecule” that can damage DNA. Recent studies cited by the American Academy of Dermatology found wildfire smoke is associated with an increase in patient visits for skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis. “Your skin is one of your first line defenses against the env

Yankees' Domingo Germán pitches perfect game

Image
Oakland, Calif. — Domingo Germán of the New York Yankees pitched the 24th perfect game in major league history Wednesday night, retiring all 27 Oakland batters in an 11-0 victory over the Athletics. It was the first perfect game since Seattle Mariners ace Félix Hernández threw one against the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 15, 2012. There were three that season – but none since until Germán finished the first no-hitter in the big leagues this year. He joined Don Larsen (1956), David Wells (1998) and David Cone (1999) as Yankees pitchers to throw perfect games. Larsen’s came in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was the first time in his Yankee career that Germán pitched an entire game, all nine innings, CBSSports.com’s Matt Snyder points out. And, Snyder writes, “Germán didn’t exactly enter the game on a hot streak. He coughed up 17 runs, 15 earned, on 15 hits in 5 1/3 innings in his previous two starts. He gave up 10 runs alone last time out,
